The Power of Words

No, I m not going to share how valuable words are and I don’t care if I use the precise word to articulate myself. This post is all about a book named “Word Power Made Easy” by Norman Lewis and one of my roommates whom we call Muddu Baby( Ramya ).

We four live together in room number 114 of IIIT-A girls hostel. Out of four; three of us, namely Suchithra, Ramya and I, have their own copy of “Word Power Made Easy” which rests peacefully on our bed 24 hours a day(I believe my 3rd roommate will feel hurt and neglected if she doesn’t get to see her name in this post, I m sooooooooo sorry Saumya). All three of us are regular readers of this book in our ad hoc attempt to improve our vocabulary. Among us, I and Ramya share an unusual bond.

Ramya and I are almost on the verge of finishing the book. Ramya has got this ‘conspicuous’ habit of using newly learned words in everyday sentences making them special. Some examples of her sentence creations are “I m flabbergasted”; “..in retrospection with…”; “..it is conspicuous that…”; “..my words are benevolent...”. These sentences are just ‘vignettes’ of her everyday speech. Her ‘incandescent’ skills of sentence making usually ‘obfuscate’ people like us.

Not just this, she has a very special way of irritating an ‘indolent’ and ‘indigent’ soul like me. Every time when she finds an interesting word; she asks me to check if I can retain its meaning or not. And, sadly, my ‘ephemeral’ memory leaves me with just a slight feeling of déjà vu. After this she smugs at me. But, everything has got two sides to it; whenever I failed, that word became permanent in my memory. Now, I read the book with utmost care. But I fall short again; ask her and she will ‘corroborate’ my words.

All this has its very own fun attached to it. Our ‘cosmopolitan’ room loves Muddu Baby’s creations and we mimic her all the time; and to tell you the truth I ‘covet’ her cryptic ability to learn so many words so swiftly and using them too in her daily speech.

P.S.:- All the words written in ' . ' have been taken from Word Power Made Easy and I do not claim to be a maven in their usage.

BIR- Books I Read
It all started when…

I joined my college with hatred to books which I believed was innate. I thought I have already rote too many books to get into a good college, its time for me to take a break. When I joined my institution the only books I have read apart from course books were “You Can Win” and “Wings of Fire”. I never had a smoldering desire for reading. A year passed and I was sick of my college too. I had too much free time so I decided to read something as it was innocuous and I had nothing better to do without moving any portion of my body. So, the first book that landed in my hands was “Tuesday s with Morrie’s” and it took me a month to finish it. I enjoyed every page of it and realized that, apart from being harmless, they are interesting too. Since then, I have been ardently in love with books. In last one year reading has been a custom, sometimes finishing 2 books in a week. Now I can’t visualize my life without books. From enemy they became my closest friend, teaching me the various small but vital lessons, helping me to grow faster, changing the meaning and philosophy of my life. As they say
“Books are the legacies that a great genius leaves to mankind, which are delivered down from generation to generation as presents to the posterity of those who are yet unborn.”
